AP Art Classes

TWHS Visual Arts Department offers several different Advanced Placement (AP) Classes.  These classes include AP Art History, AP Art & Design Drawing, 2D & 3D.  Students enrolled in these classes will have the opportunity to take the College Board AP Exam or Portfolio Review to potentially earn college credit. Please see below to learn more about all of the AP classes offered.
 

AP Art History

Course Description:

 

This course is a year-long (two semester) advanced, AP level course. The AP Art History course welcomes students into the global art world to engage with its forms and content as they research, discuss, read, and write about art, artists, art making, and responses to and interpretations of art. By investigating specific course content of 250 works of art characterized by diverse artistic traditions from prehistory to the present, students develop an in-depth, holistic understanding of the history of art from a global perspective. Students learn and apply skills of visual, contextual,

and comparative analysis to engage with a variety of art forms, developing understanding of individual works and interconnections across history.​

Prerequisite Courses That Must Be Completed First: 

Students must be in 11th grade or above and have taken and passed World History.

(AP World History is recommended over level World History)

AP Art & Design Drawing

Course Description:

 

The focus of this course is the development and implementation of creative problem solving and technical skills of Drawing. Students will incorporate the elements of art and principles of design while using a variety of media including paint, ink, charcoal, graphite and other mark making substances, this can also include photography and digital arts. Studio work will focus on executing individualized projects guided by your overarching Sustained Investigation.

**Students enrolled in the advanced placement Drawing class will put together a portfolio of

15 2D pieces which they can then submit for college credit. The 15 pieces will consist of a

minimum of 12 works and as many as 3 process pictures.

Course Description:

AP Art & Design 3D

Course Description:

 

This course is a year-long (two semester) advanced course where students will be working with and creating in 3D mediums. The AP Art and Design course framework presents an inquiry-based approach to learning about and making art and design. Students are expected to conduct an in-depth, sustained investigation of materials, processes, and ideas. The framework focuses on concepts and skills emphasized within college art and design foundations courses with the same intent: to help students become inquisitive, thoughtful artists and designers able to articulate information about their work. AP Art and Design students develop and apply skills of inquiry and investigation, practice, experimentation, revision, communication, and reflection.

**Students enrolled in the Advanced Placement 3D Art & Design class will put together a portfolio

of 15 3D pieces which they can then submit for college credit. The 15 pieces will consist of a

minimum of 8 completed works and as many as 7 process pictures.

Prerequisite Courses That Must Be Completed First:  Ceramics & Sculpture II & III
